How to Choose the Perfect Felt Cat Cave

Every cat owner knows the look: your cat ignores the expensive bed and curls up in the box it came in. Cats want a small, warm, enclosed space of their own — and that is exactly what a felt cat cave is. A den, not a display piece.

Start with size. Our caves come in three sizes: Small suits kittens and petite cats, Medium fits most adult cats, and Large is for big breeds or cats who like to stretch out fully. If you are between sizes, go up — a cave that is slightly roomy gets used far more than one that is slightly tight. Prices start at £35.

Then look at the material. Ours are 100% wool felt: naturally warm in winter, breathable in summer, and it holds its shape instead of collapsing after a few weeks. Wool also wicks away moisture and does not carry the chemical smell some synthetic beds have, which matters to a nose as sensitive as a cat's.

Think about the entrance. Cats like to see out while feeling hidden, so a cave with a generous round opening works better than a narrow slit. It should be easy to walk into, not something your cat has to squeeze through.

Placement matters more than most people expect. Put the cave somewhere quiet and warm, near where the family spends time — not in a draughty hallway or a room nobody visits. If your cat ignores it for a day or two, try moving it to another corner before giving up.

To help your cat settle in, put a familiar blanket or one of their favourite treats inside. Never force them in or lift them out mid-nap — the cave has to feel like their choice, not yours. Most cats claim it within a few days.

Keeping it clean is simple: shake out loose fur outside, spot clean with cold water and a little mild soap, and let it air dry. Do not machine wash it hot — heat and agitation are what felt wool, and a hot wash will shrink the cave.
